May is National Bike Month, sponsored by the League of American Bicyclists and celebrated in communities from coast to coast. Established in 1956, National Bike Month is a chance to showcase the many benefits of bicycling — and encourage more folks to give biking a try.
In honor of National Bike Month, the City of Columbia hosted the Mayor’s Bike & Walk Summit, May 4-5, 2017. A handful of mayors from around the state described how biking and walking made their cities and towns more livable and accessible.
Community leaders, transportation professionals, elected officials, Main Street officials, school district officers, principals, law enforcement, and bike and walk enthusiasts learned about how to build more bike-
able, walkable, and accessible cities and towns in South Carolina. Palmetto Clean Fuels attended the event and showcased alternative fuels whose use, in addition to biking and walking, can help reduce petroleum consumption.
Whether you pump those pedals to preserve your health or the environment, or simply ride to explore your community, National Bike Month is an opportunity to celebrate the bicycle and the many reasons we ride.
