Saving Energy at Home

Building Energy Codes
In 1997, the General Assembly passed a mandatory statewide building code that incorporated the Council of American Building Officials’ (CABO) Model Energy Code (MEC) as the official state energy code.

In 2012, the South Carolina Legislature adopted the 2009 edition of the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC).

Questions regarding applicable building code requirements, inspection or enforcement should be referred first to your local building inspector and then to the South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation in Columbia.

Residential buildings comply with the Energy Code if they meet certain criteria.
